Canada Cover Scarce fur-trade cover (stampless folded letter) to William Mactavish at Hudson's Bay House, Sault Ste. Marie, Canada West. Written at Kilchrist, Scotland. British postmarks are Glasgow (AP 9, 1849) and Liverpool (AP 11, 1849). Rated 1/2 Sterling, carried to Boston as closed-bag mail in the Cunard steamship /Cambria/ (left Liverpool April 14, arrived Boston April 27). Pale transit postmarks at Holland Landing (date not clear) and Penetanguishene (May 6). Long and interesting letter written by Dugald Mactavish (William's brother). In 1849, William Mactavish was in charge of the HBC's post at the Sault. He went to York Factory in 1850 and to Red River in 1857, and eventually became Governor of Assiniboia and of Rupert's Land. He was imprisoned in late 1869 by Louis Riel, but released in February 1870 because of his ill health (tuberculosis). A rare item in excellent condition, sent to Canada's farthest-west post office of the time. The Sault Ste. Marie office had just opened in 1846. This cover sold in an F.E. Eaton sale (probably late 1980s/early 1990s) for $700.00 plus commission. Estimate
